Trains - By Rail

Long ago, Argentina had an extensive rail system provided by the British to transport people and cargo to various destinations around the country. Due to political and economical reasons that system has been all but derailed so to speak. Rail systems still exist in Argentina but most of the are within the Buenos Aires province or to nearby locations outside of this area. The system today is largely for commuters or travelers who want to take get away for the weekend or vacation.

Commuter Trains

These offer an inexpensive method of reaching the parts of Buenos Aires and the suburbs that cannot be reached by the subways. Many buses can reach these areas but the trains can get you there faster and with less hassle. Most trains travel to areas that are not for the average tourist and some of these areas are quite rundown so make sure you know where you are traveling to. The best train routes for tourist and locals alike to explore the nicer areas of the suburbs are those that travel to Tigre. Between Buenos Aires and Tigre are many of the fancier neighborhoods that run along the river. There you can see large mansions and exquisite estates as well as trendy shops and restaurants. Check with your hotel or a guide on what places are the best to make a stop since some areas are better suited for cars than pedestrians.

Tren De La Costa

This special train travels along the coast of the River plate from Olivos, where the president resides, to Tigre. The train is comfortable and stylish while offering great views of many large estates that populate this part of the Buenos Aires suburbs. The stations along the way are renovated and elegant structures providing a glimpse into the past from a time when the British railroad system spanned the country. The end of the train journey takes you to the Tigre Delta. Located there is the small yet fun theme park of Parque De La Costa. They offer numerous shows, rides, and roller coasters.
