Walking Around

The best place in Argentina to take walking tours is in Buenos Aires, the capital. Many major cities outside of Buenos Aires have some decent areas to walk around and enjoy the sites. Most smaller cities however are like those elsewhere in the world where some sort of transportation is needed to really make exploring worthwhile.

Despite what has been said in the media about rampant crime and protests, large parts of Buenos Aires can be roamed about fairly safely in the daytime. This will allow you to see different classes of people, taste the differences in food at local cafes, and see the great architecture that makes Buenos Aires what it is today. If you get tired of walking or run into a slow and boring part of the city, you will always be in short distance of a bus stop, taxi, perhaps even a subway line that can take you somewhere more active and enjoyable.

Always be careful when walking on narrow streets and when crossing intersections. Many of the smaller streets or cross-streets do not have crosswalk signs. Also, most local pedestrians do not obey the crosswalk signs or traffic and attempt to cross at any open chance. Although there are many chances to cross like this, never follow the group just because they are crossing. Check the traffic and the traffic lights. It is all to easy to think it is safe to cross by seeing a few people make the start only to see them running across with you stuck in the middle of the street and a car heading right at you. Another thing to watch out for are the buses. Some streets have very narrow sidewalks with what seems like room for only one or two people side-by-side. Buses tend to zoom down these streets only inches away from the curb. When crossing a street, many will not slow down for you when making a turn at an intersection or side street. If you don't get out of the way fast there is a high chance of being hit.

Here are some of the best places to walk around in order to people watch, shop, dine, or just to get out and about.

Puerto Madero
Avenida Santa Fe
Avenida Corrientes
Calle Florida and Lavalle
9 De Julio
Recoleta
Belgrano

If you decide to walk at night, stick to street that have good constant lighting and well populated. Many neighborhoods are safe to walk through during the day but at nighttime the lighting can be extremely poor and small robberies do occur. This includes most wealthy neighborhoods in side the city.

Highly Recommended

If the evening is nice and you want to have a quiet stroll, Puerto Madero is a great place to enjoy some great food and silence from the hectic downtown noises. Puerto Madero is the dock area that is populated by numerous fancy restaurants and lounges as well as the Hilton Hotel. The Prefectura, or Coast Guard, keep a close eye on the activity making the area quite safe and enjoyable. More so than probably any other part of the city.
